Spline Smoothing: A Special Case of Diffusion Smoothing

چکیده
schemes, it provides a uniform theoretical base for some other smoothing methods. It has shown that the elegant Gaussian smoothing (GS) is equivalent to the initial value problem of DS, and the widely-used Repeated Averaging (RA) is a special case of the explicit DS. This paper further proves that Spline smoothing (SS) is a special case of the explicit DS with a "convex corner cling" boundary condition. This result coincides with Poggio's conclusion However, our proof starts from the diffusion smoothing theory instead of regularisation theory and is given in the mask form, thus is simpler and more straightforward. Moreover, it makes us possible to explicit the scale space behaviour of spline smoothing.

Use of Two Smoothing Parameters in Penalized Spline Estimator for Bi-variate Predictor Non-parametric Regression Model
Penalized spline criteria involve the function of goodness of fit and penalty, which in the penalty function contains smoothing parameters. It serves to control the smoothness of the curve that works simultaneously with point knots and spline degree. The regression function with two predictors in the non-parametric model will have two different non-parametric regression functions. Therefore, we...
متن کاملDerivation of Equivalent Kernel for General Spline Smoothing: a Systematic Approach
We consider ®rst the spline smoothing nonparametric estimation with variable smoothing parameter and arbitrary design density function and show that the corresponding equivalent kernel can be approximated by the Green function of a certain linear differential operator. Furthermore, we propose to use the standard (in applied mathematics and engineering) method for asymptotic solution of linear d...
متن کاملComponent Selection and Smoothing in Smoothing Spline Analysis of Variance Models
We propose a new method for model selection and model fitting in nonparametric regression models, in the framework of smoothing spline ANOVA. The “COSSO” is a method of regularization with the penalty functional being the sum of component norms, instead of the squared norm employed in the traditional smoothing spline method. The COSSO provides a unified framework for several recent proposals fo...
متن کاملModelling and smoothing parameter estimation with multiple quadratic penalties
Penalized likelihood methods provide a range of practical modelling tools, including spline smoothing, generalized additive models and variants of ridge regression. Selecting the correct weights for penalties is a critical part of using these methods and in the single penalty case the analyst has several well founded techniques to choose from. However, many modelling problems suggest a formulat...
متن کاملPeriodic and Recursive Control Theoretic Smoothing Splines
In this paper a recursive control theoretic smoothing spline approach is proposed for reconstructing a closed contour. Periodic splines are generated through minimizing a cost function subject to constraints imposed by a linear control system. The optimal control problem is shown to be proper and sufficient optimality conditions are derived for a special case of the problem using Hamilton-Jacob...
